I’ve been asked to restore a couple of acrylic paintings by someone local. She brought the paintings over today and after looking at them I realized that they are prints on canvas. She purchased them in the late 90’s so I’m assuming the process was giclee.
There’s a bulge in the canvas and normally with a loose canvas I would spray the back with water to fix it. I’m not sure this can be done with this print.
I’m wondering if anyone has experience with fixing a printed canvas. Any thoughts would be appreciated!
You can try carefully removing the staples or tacks from the loose side of the canvas, then re-stretch it tightly across the frame. This often solves the issue if it’s just sagging.
If the bulge is still visible after re-stretching, you can then lightly mist the back of the canvas with water. However, before doing this, it’s important to check if the canvas print is waterproof. Some giclée prints—especially older ones—may not have protective coatings, and spraying them could cause the ink to run or fade.
